CHIEF LIBRARIAN

The Chief Librarian is the custodian of all library information resources and coordinating all library activities across the institution. The role also advises the management on matters of library services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

a) Lead the procurement of information resources from local and foreign suppliers (Print and non-print).
b) Coordinate overall provision of library and information services across the KIM network of libraries.
c) Formulate and develop library policies and procedure manuals and documentation such as strategic plans and annual budgets.
d) Facilitate the full automation of the library functions and liaise with the ICT team to manage the integrated library systems and related technology.
e) Develop appropriate training programs for staff in the use of automated library systems and other new technologies.
f) Prepare and administer the annual budget for the library within the approved limits.
g) Develop strategies for the growth of information resources such as e-resources.
h) Liaise with donors and initiate collaborations and linkages with strategic development partners.
i) Coordinate the processing of information materials and their dispatch to branch libraries.
j) Develop programs to develop information literacy skills on the use of library services.
k) Evaluate library stock holdings against collection, development and reading policies.

KEY SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

a) Knowledge on Library Management Systems.
b) Knowledge of Open source software process and application.
c) Knowledge on desktop software applications, including productivity and web-publishing software.
d) Knowledge on cataloguing circulation, reference and acquisition.

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

a) Master’s degree in library and information science or any other relevant field.
b) Member of Kenya Library Association
c) Six (6) years’ experience in relevant field.
